Alkyds: Al stands for alcohol and kyd for cid with in turn stands for organic acid. This style of coating was developed before plastics were invented. It s made from alcohols that have two more hydroxyl- OH groups. The familiar alcohols methanol and ethanol only have a single hydroxyl group. The organic acid are made from natural oils to which a carboxyl group COOH is chemically attached to both ends. When a carboxyl and a alcohol group are reacted together you get what is called and ester linkage or in the form of a plastic a polyester. So technically an alkyd is the original polyester.
