Going to do another repaint on a Ford 901. Last one I went with Majic paint. Came out good but want better. Thinking of going with the Valspar Ford Red #68311 and Ford Gray #68309. Do you guys use the Valspar hardener with it? I read some do and some don't. Any recommendations? Also used the Majic catalyst when I did that one. Does Valspar make something for their paint for spraying/thinning or can I use something else not in their product line? Just trying to get info for a good paint job. Still have another month or 2 for prepping it so I have time top decide. Thanks!

Valspar is going to be quite a bit better than what I've heard the Majic paint will result in, but still scraping the bottom of the barrel. If you want a really good paint job, you need to go to a paint store and spend about 2-3 times what you want to with Valspar.

I don't think Valspar makes any paint worth bringing home. I painted a Kubota tractor which faded to peach color within three months. Then I painted the interior of a house one time the customer wanted Valspar so I tried it and after a couple of days fighting with it to get it to cover talked the customer into throwing the paint out and get some better paint. I put four coats of paint on a couple of rooms and you could still see marks on the wall where the paint didn't cover. I got some Glidden paint and the paint started covering in one coat.

I showed our Valspar representative this string, he turned white. Each paint company has certain specialties. PPG,
Dupont, BASF are big in automotive OEM. Valspar's speciality is coil coating, they bought out all thier
competitors over the last 15 years. Now in turn they have been bought by Sherwin Williams. I would be curious to
know who makes the best after market paint. If any one needs info on how to test eg. hiding, adhesion, i'd be
happy pass on what are for the most part are simple procedures.

You guys do know that Valspar is owned by Sherwin Williams paint? Sherwin Williams took over Valspar in 2016.

That's been mentioned already.

House of Kolor is a Valspar brand as well and I don't think you'll hear many say it is garbage.

True, the JD didn't last long enough to need any paint. Then the Case dealership only buys paint ever six months and I missed the deadline.

Years ago I pull shipments of paint out of the Valspar plant in Lafayette, Indiana. Most of it was for
industrial use.

Here's some of the Case/IH paint, I like it.

(quoted from post at 07:42:18 04/16/19) Some one on here I believe said that the John Deere paint is all Valspar. Is there any truth to this.

It seems to be true as of today, but could change tomorrow.

Keep in mind that "made by Valspar" doesn't necessarily mean that it's the same spec as any other random can you might find at Ace Hardware. What I'm getting at here is: If you find Valspar Green paint for $19/gallon, it is probably worth about that.

I would bet that the difference in performance between "like" lines of paint will be so small that any % error in prep work and application will be what swings any test. Omni and Nason will both last "forever," are at a similar price point, and neither seem to get complaints for hiding. Of course they are most often compared to the alkyds which hide horribly.

FWIW I don't believe DuPont has their hands in any paint at this point. That's Axalta Coatings now.

Hiding is dependent of the pigments they use, mainly black and white pigments give good hiding. If you want a bright colour, less hiding the more dependent on the primer. We do a lot colour control with films spec. at 0.65 mils. half of what a post paint facility would do. I'd be a little wary saying a coating is no good do to its poor hiding.

Coating has very poor hiding, possible hypothesis
1. Reputable company makes underperforming product compared to competitors. (Unlikely or they would have lost market share years ago).
2. End user did not agitate sufficiently. (Unlikely, user has significant experience with coatings).
3. Coating inadvertently over reduced. (Hard to detect, easy to do if not intimately familiar with coatings formulation).

Solvents for coatings come in three main categories, the first is called the active solvent. These are specific the resin system and will dissolve it. The second is called a secondary solvent which only the dissolves the resin in the presence of the active solvent. Third is the most common called a diluent. This is what most consumers of the coating, industrial, and retail purchase to lower the viscosity. What is not well known is that the diluent does not dissolve the resin but rather tolerates it to a limited extent. Once the tolerance limit is reached the coating will become anemic looking and a great deal of the hiding will be lost.

Every paint company has several lines and types of paint. Alkyd paints by any mfr will be lousy compared to different lines of acrylic and true 2 part paints.
