We have a 1937 John Deere b,we are getting the rims powder coated. My question is this they said they could do the whole tractor since we are completely new to this what are the pros and cons. Looked through the archives and didn't see anything so your opinion will help us decide yes are no thanks for your knowledge and a happy New year

The powder I use from Eastwood has to be cured at 400 degrees F for 30 minutes. Are you willing to cook your whole tractor at that temp for that long?

So will our rims have a different shine ? I have heard of people doing this frames and heavy cast and then paint other parts? We are going to put new seals in the axles ? What would it hurt? Sorry for all the stupid questions. But please chime in

I am not a fan of powder coating, think it does not have a luster, and if scratched tends to rust and flake.

I have gotten a few parts for different projects powder coated. The biggest thing about powder coat is that in most situations it is applied over bare steel with no primer. If it gets a scratch through to the steel and is out in the weather the powder coat is separating from the steel due to the rust at a very rapid rate. Another thing is that if you get the thing dusty and wipe the dust off you will be getting lot of tiny scratches in it which over time will diminish the luster. Powder coat is good as long as you keep it out of the weather.

David, what brand of paint do you use? This was my grandfather's tractor and i really want to do a good job. Where is a good place to get paint we are in IL. i have only sprayed cheap implement paint with a siphon spray gun. Any info would be great PS we will not be doing any powder coating. Man it seamed like such a good idea. Is spraying epoxy any different than regular primer?

I have been using products from PPG's Nason line they are more than the paint sold at TSC and dealers but a lot less than the higher end automotive paints.

You will get a lot of recommendations here.

I use the NAPA one part epoxy primer and their acrylic urethane with hardener. I would agree, probably the best coat is under coat and clear, I have not done that, so no expertise. I started out with enamel and hardener, really like the urethane now, can mix in 1/2 clear on final coat to make it a clear coat. I am painting the LI with the Montana brand acrylic urethane because they got me the color match, but it does not seem to hold the gloss like the NAPA.

There is a fellow Glennster on here, I paint, but if I really wanted it nice, would take mine to him.

Take it slow, learn and have fun.

There was a suggestion on here about power washing, I agree with that, use a good washer that will produce steam and it will take off most of the paint without an abrasive. Be careful as it will drive water past seals and cut them if you hit them direct, so change your fluids after it is cleaned up.
