If you want the paint to hold up you have to clean all of the rust off first. A cup type white wheel works well. Then you have t "kill" the tiny particles of rust that are left with one of the phosphoric acid rust converters.

It's a lot of work to paint a tractor. If you would spend the money and use automotive paint chances are it would last a couple decades. Automotive paint is probably four times the cost of cheap paint so that would be your call. If any of the existing paint is in good condition you could take a small part to a paint store and have them computer match it. You might have to sand the outer layer of dirt off and clear coat it. As far as cheap paint I'm impressed with Rust-oleum Farm and Implement paint. They probably don't have a premixed color for your tractor but if you are patient you could buy a couple different colors and intermix them yourself. Probably John Deere yellow and black could be made that color. I wouldn't use rattle can paint. It's never good quality paint.

Whether you use an automotive paint or the cheap ones, remember that prep is the key. This includes removing/treating the rust, thorough washing, using grease remover and a lot more.

thanks . I will look into the rust-oleum farm paint, i have no problem adjusting the color to match MF yellow thanks for the idea. in regards to primer, it looks like i don't need to paint a primer, but it seem that after taking off rust and old paint then all i would need to do is use a rust inhibitor or phosphoric acid rust converters and wash, before painting. do i have that right.

Great, so after that i can go straight to painting, after using the rust inhibitor or phosphoric acid, can i wait a few weeks before i paint it or do i have to paint right away.

Rust oleum safety yellow would be a good color, you can get it in spray cans, to gallon cans. I painted my MF135 with the rust oleum paint you get at home depot, I used sunrise red, mixed smoke grey/black/aluminum to make the flint grey metallic, and mixed smoke grey/aluminum for the silver. I also used the gloss hardener in it also.

No Steve. After using one of the rust converters, exactly as the directions tell you, you then need to apply primer. The top coat is resistant to weather and abrasion which the primer is not. The primer however will bond to bare metal and old residual paint where the new paint will not. The best primer to use is epoxy, mainly because it resists rust better than other types. However, it is also best to use the same brand of primer as the top coat that you plan to use, in order to insure compatibility. Settle on your top coat, then get the primer that is recommended on the label. There is usually a re-coat window, that is somewhere around 48 hours. If you let too much time pass after priming and go out of the window, you will have to scuff the primer with a scotch brite pad prior to top coating in order to achieve mechanical adhesion in the absence of chemical adhesion.

Stephen, where can i find a small color sample of the MF yellow . i went to Rust-oulom and they have caterpillar yellow which look similar but it would be nice to have the right color to look at. anyidea where i can get a sample color chip

Massey Ferguson Tractor Yellow (MF Spec M-1023)
Ford M1023
Ditzler PPG 81217
Rustoleum/Massey Ferguson Yellow H-23
(also could be)
International Harvester Apache Yellow (code 165)
Ditzler PPG 80315
Acme Rogers 1473
Sherwin Williams 3907

Is there a small part on the tractor that perhaps was in an out of the way place that wasn't in the direct sun or damaged? You could clean the part and sand it with 220 grit sandpaper and give it a coat of clear. This will give you a sample to mix paint from.

I'm wondering how close Caterpillar Yellow is to the color you are needing. Looking at pictures on the net it looks like it matches.

As far as primer, the only time you don't need one is going over existing paint. Anywhere there is bare metal showing it will need a primer. The paint won't adhere very well to bare metal and will fail sooner than it should.

As nice as that tractor looks I have to ask why repaint ? You won't want to use it then !
