Long 680 Fuel Injection Pump

Good Day All!!

I tried to start my Long 680 after a brutal winter here in Texas and she would not start. It fired when I used a little starter fluid but would not fire on her own.

I went through the troubleshooting steps to make sure I had all the air out of the system and diesel all the way to the injectors. Well, I have no diesel coming out of the injection pump.

So, I have some of questions.
1) Do injection pumps really go bad and just quit pumping?
2) How hard is it to replace the pump myself?
3) Where would be the best place to purchase one online?

Also, I plan on replacing the booster pump while I'm there.

Thanks all in advance,

Mike G.

Did that twice this morning. Verified fuel was moving from tank to the booster pump (via manual lever) to both filters. Fuel squirted out of both filter bleeders when the lever on the booster pump was depressed.

Verified injection pump was air free via booster pump manual lever. Cracked injection pump bleeders one at a time and verified fuel squirting out.

Loosened the fuel lines at the injectors and used the booster pump lever but no fuel at the injectors. Tried turning the engine over many times, 20 seconds at a time, but no fuel at the injectors.

Disconnected one of the injector fuel lines at the injection pump outlet. Tried the booster pump lever but no fuel. Tried turning the engine over but no fuel. Cannot get fuel to the fuel lines to the injectors through the injection pump.

I did this process twice and think it was methodical and thorough. I welcome any other thoughts and/or feedback if I missed something.

Fiat motors can be a pain to get the fuel going.I'd try pull starting it,I've had to pull them quite a ways to get them going after running out of fuel or changing filters.

The most common pump I have seen on Long tractors is CAV. The CAV rotary pump will have issues after setting about 8 months or
more with out being started using the new Ultra low sulfur diesel. The problem only gets worse in areas of the US where bio diesel
is blended in. 25-30% of all pump work I see is stuck pumps. Thats just how big of an issue pumps locking up after setting awhile
has become. If you have fuel coming out the bleeder than the vein pump is trying to do its job, its the high pressure side of the
pump that is stuck. This pump will need to be torn down and freed up. Al

I have changed filters and had no problem getting the air out of the lines and getting her up and running again. I will consider pulling as you suggest. Thanks for the input.

Al, that sounds about right. She sat for quite a while before I got back to the farm to try to start her up. Unfortunately I don't have time to tear the pump down. I plan on replacing the pump and rebuilding the old one on the work bench for a spare.

My plan is to pull the cover plate, mark the gears and pull the old pump and install the new one. Please comment if I'm about to make a big mistake.

Thanks for the feedback,

Mike G.
