Long 460 PTO Clutch

Greetings! My son purchased a Long 460. Runs greaat, after some work eveything works except we are having issues getting the PTO engaged. Despite holding the clutch all the way in, attempts to engage the PTO result in grinding. We can shutoff the engine, engage and then restart and the PTO works fine, except pushing in the clutch leaves it engaged and spining. In short the PTO clutch does not release.

I should mention,,, based on what I have seen in the book, there are 2 versions of 460's, one with a separate PTO clutch lever, and one with a 2 stage clutch that works off the peddle. His only has the peddle.

We have adjusted the peddle free play and believe it is set correctly. In the book there is pictures of a adjustment process for the PTO clutch thru the right side case window, however we donot see anything looking like the adjustment bolt shown in the manual.

What are we missing? Anyone had one of these where the clutch is frozen engaged? We did find some water in the transmission oil, which we have changed. Perhaps related?

Thanks for any help provided!

Hi Traditional Farmer!

No sir, if we kill the motor, engage the pto then start the motor. The pto spins the brush cutter. However pushing the clutch in has no affect, the pto clutch stays engaged.

If we attempt to engage with the motor running, it grinds a lot!

It seems no matter what we do the pto clutch is engaged.

Thanks for any help you can lend!

There should be two linkages down on the left side of the transmission. I'd try adjusting the one for the PTO before I did anything drastic. The main clutch linkage would be the one that moves first. Those things have an odd clutch set up. The main clutch is in the pressure plate, the PTO clutch runs against the flywheel.

Any idea how to get it unstuck??

Was thinking about rolling the tractor backwards on a hill into some tall brush with the clutch in. Hopefully would put load on the clutch with the pedal in and break it free?
