How to fix a Chevy 4x4 shaft

Here is a picture on how to fix shaft when splines are shot. Instead of spending money on replacement I fixed without it costing a dime (unless you count electricity and shop supplies) at first I was going to drill a hole but when I tried center punch it just chipped tip off. Then I ground and welded 1/2" bolt on, then I realized I could of just welded a bead which I also did

I'm going to assume this is for "on farm use" and won't be going down the road.
That clamp is going to catch and wrap every weed it comes across and you'll have a good mess to cut out.
I would think a junkyard shaft will get you farther.
