General VS Avery

the tag that says "General GG" is a good one! The General will have a hood with 3 "Speed line" embossed into it and a grille that goes straight down, while an Avery will have one embossed line and a more bulbous grille with a pinched in "waist"-in MOST cases........

Thanks. I see one that is painted yellow in a field near the road. Every once in awhile the owner will list it on C'sL as a General but it has all the Avery stuff you pointed out. I'm always in a rush to the VA or trying to get home but one of these days I'll try to track the owner down. Mike

A tractor dealer imported 5 BF AVERY tractors from America in 1944 for working in the fens of Lincolnshire and thy were identical to the photo of the Cletrac General. All 5 tractors have survived and are in tractor collections. MJ.

I'm looking at what the owner is calling a BF Avery A. According to the serial number list found on the BF Avery site, the serial numbers, the second or third character in the serial number list is an "A". Serial number on the tractor in question is 2430808. No confusion of an A in there. Is this in fact an Avery A, or one of the variants built before or after?

Thanx !

Pete

Not always. I owned a 1945 BF Avery model A that was identical to a General except for the red paint and a different front wheel than in the picture. I bought it from the son of the original owner with the lettering still somewhat legible on the hood.

If there were parts on hand when the company changed hands, I doubt they shoved them aside. They no doubt used them up.

B F Avery s/n is stamped on of RT frame rail near gear shift, General used a s/n plate attached to side of RT frame rail also near gear shifter. General have FA in S/N like 2FA154 , B F Avery have A in s/n like 7A270. S/n 2430808 is a Hercules engine s/n , there is embossed casing date on Rt front of block behind MAG. General's build 1939 to 1942, BF Avery build 1942 to 1945, are same tractor. BF Avery' after s/n27270 also 1945 have a new style hood & grill, now called model A .
