I am new to owning a tractor. I recently acquired a long 445 I was told to be careful about shifting the tractor as it will get stuck between gears. I was also told that the "fix" was not to difficult. Is this the case? Any advise will be welcome

Sounds like something in the shifter mechanism is worn or broken.I had the same problem with one of my AC 5040 tractors, basically the same tractor as the 445 I swapped out the
whole shifter plate assembly with one off a parts tractor. If you take the cover plate off with the shifter everything comes up and you can see what the problem is depending on your
mechanical ability of course.Or get a mechanic to do it.

Thanks for the reply. I will take a look after it warms up in a couple of weeks. Any more detailed suggestions will be greatly appreciate.

When you lift the shifter plate off, you will see (I think) 3 pieces of metal with slots cut into them, the shifter lever moves these. Line them back up and you should be good to go

Bloke who delivered mine back in 2005 told me the same & then promptly demonstrated it to me, blocking my drive with the tractor stuck! He wanted me to give him a lift back & then take off the gearlever top plate to unstick the selectors (not too difficult - takes about 30 mins to do). I told him he was going nowhere until he'd unstuck it!! Together we rocked the tractor to & fro by turning the back wheel whilst moving the lever back to neutral, & after 5 mins or so of trying it popped out. It happened to me once during my 12 year ownership & I got the wife to push the lever whilst I did the rocking - worked second time in about 30 secs.
If you are careful all should be well - I really miss mine -( it burnt up last summer due to a short on the starter) it was the perfect size for me. I now have a Zetor 7045 which is a much bigger beast - over 4 tons, which will be a challenge on my marsh!

(quoted from post at 02:35:09 03/11/19) Had to look it up,I'm surprised a Long made it to Wales or was it a Fiat model same as the Long?

It was actually an UTB 445DT or Universal 445DT as they were sold over here after FIAT sold the designs to UTB of Romania.
They were AFAIK sold in US as Longs, Allis Chalmers (my user manual is for an AC 5045 e.g.) & also as Olivers.
I had to rebuild the starter when I got it, one ball joint on the steering & one draft control spring were the only spares needed in 12 years of VERY heavy rush cutting, some backhoe work & a good bit of logging & loader work. I just hope my "new" Zetor is as reliable as the UTB - it's certainly a lot more comfortable! but I think I'll miss the loader more than anything else...
