Oliver 1755 Waukesha pre-purchase check

I'm looking at buying an Oliver 1755 and I'm traveling quite a ways to get there. Are there any engine checks that I can do to see if the engine's been rebuilt before without tearing into it. What are some pointers that I should look at that would be high ticket items that I might be able to notice before I purchase it? It's running as it should according to the seller and the oil was changed every year without a lot of use on it. Any pointers would be helpful I'm heading there Friday.

1755's didn't give many issues. If you
take a light and small mirror you can look
in the oil fill to see if it has the 12
point heads on the rod bolts.

The mirror is not needed, one of the rods is inline with the oil fill and the bolt head can be seen on that rod by turning engine over through the fill/dipstick hole.

I'd make sure the three speed has all three ranges. You should be able to feel it "bump" between shifts.

Check the hydraulic fluid level before you run it and after. Make sure it's the same.

ask the guy if he knows of any engine work? or did he buy it new? plus the experienced mechanic's can look at the head and pan gaskets and
it will show if the engine has been apart. first thing i always look for. another important deal is the hydraulic's . check how it starts
and runs is the biggest thing. post a picture we can see stuff also. plus the tires!! big factor. cab no cab? i really like mine . plus look
at oil level on the dip stick that a big deal also. cause if you pull dipstick and its below add mark thats a big deal. plus look for any
oil leaks, plus them hydraulic hoses are something else and those fittings are something else and not cheap.

another good thing to know is the hrs on the tractor. if its got under 5k its a good thing if it looks good. once up to 8-10k hrs you can expect anything to happen. and any diesel engine should make at least 8 k hrs before needing an overhaul under good conditions. but some people can wreak a tractor in 2k hrs.

So just a follow up. I did end up purchasing the tractor and everything seems pretty good shape. The only issue I currently have is the steering is pretty loose feeling. I have narrowed it to the steering cylinder or the pump. I am currently pulling the front apart to get to the cylinder and start there. I ordered a shop manual but am having a hard time figuring out what is holding the monster cast grill on besides the 4 bolts in the bottom.

It seems to have lower than I would expect oil pressure after warming up. During full throttle operation it sits right at 23-25. Idle it will drop to about 15. I already cleaned out the oil relief valve out and seemed to help the pressure when it is cold. On first start it stays around 30-35. This winter I plan on dropping the pan and checking bearings.

Thanks for the pointers

Should be six (6) bolts that hold the
grill. Four (4) across the front and two
(2) behind the screen, which also holds a
tin cover as well. Grill is 300lbs.
As for oil pressure, they don't carry that much oil pressure ever. I believe it's 35 cold on a 1755, depending on where the line is attached.
As far as dropping pan to check bearings is only part of it. They have wrist pin issues that are likely to need replacing more so than rods or mains.

You should start a new post on this if you have any further questions. Original post is a couple pages back, so responce would be limited
