Question for Dieseltech or others

I have a rebuilt 1555 diesel. Pump was gone through by professional that is now retired about 8 years ago. It would ocassionally die from fuel starvation. Found a plastic gas jug cap floating in tank that I assumed got pulled down on Strainer assembly. Thought problem was fixed. After sitting awhile it did not start. Tried everything plus new filters. Finally pulled pump and had it checked. Tested good. Put together twice because I rolled a pump seal on the first attemp and had fuel in oil. Ran good for a long time with little use. Thought I ran it out of fuel today. Added fuel and started up only to quit again. Would not prime so I blew air through strainer. Bled lines and ran good then died. Replaced fuel strainer after letting a lot of fuel run out. Bled lines and started right up only to die again. Checked the little fitting off the pump for fuel return. It was clean. Tightened all fittings worried about an air leak. Still dies. Is there something in the pump that can be shutting this tractor down. Do you think I need to put in more than 3 gallons of fuel? I am about to lose my patience. Thanks for any advice.

How is the fuel flow out of the tank for five minutes into a bucket? Flow might be starting out well then slow down due to a restriction. If that's OK try running it with the two screw timing cover loose on the pump side, if it runs OK WITH the fuel leak, but dies with the cover tight there's a plugged/restriction in the RETURN line back to the tank. Also, if NAPA/WIX filters 3166 are used make SURE there's NO O ring in the filter top outer groove, that's the fuel inlet passage and must not be blocked.

Thank you Dieseltech. The tank is out of the tractor and going to be cleaned out. I will check the filter upon bleeding system.

My tank was cleaned by a professional. Good flow to prime. Started right up then died. I loosened the cover on the pump and it would prevent it from dying. I removed all the return lines and blew air through them and the T's. Fired right up. Went to wash my hands and it died. I am at a loss. I am going to replace both filters. My secondary filter says 33165. Is 3166 the primary or just a typo?

I tried a new fitting with the ball inside and it did a little better but continued to die. I punched the ball out of the old one, put it back in and all is well.
I was told you can not get one with a bigger orifice and check ball. I have to say, I almost lost my religion on this ordeal. Thanks for help everybody.
