1750 PTO Adjustment

Hi:

I need to adjust the PTO on our 1750 tractor. I got the service manual and looks easy. Take out the large pipe plug. Oops need to lower the oil level. Ok, now find the locking pin, centre it and depress it. Rotate adjusting ring one notch clockwise. Sound easy, and 2 hours later I got it moved one notch. Ok, now to get another notch. And 2 hours later, nothing. I cannot get the adjusting ring to turn clockwise. It just does not want to budge no matter what pressure I apply to turn the ring.

Is there some trick to getting a second adjustment? I can still turn the PTO by hand so I need to go more.

Thanks

The pto lever has to be in the middle, not
engaged and not on the stop. Unless you
are out of threads it should move.

Hi:

Worked on the tractor yesterday. Tried I550's suggestion and got another adjustment and then got resistance again. Keeping the PTO lever centred needed a second pair of hands. In the process of working with it I found a way to make it work. Depress locking pin. Apply pressure to adjusting nut and second pair of hands engages PTO. Adjusting nut moves half adjustment. Finish adjustment by disengaging PTO. Repeat process for another adjustment. Now I can no longer turn PTO by hand and PTO remains disengaged when in the off position. Now to test under load to see if PTO can work under load.

In rereading your initial post I think you
Were concerned with pto shaft turning when
it was off. I don't know how effective the
brake was on those 50 series. My 1650
drags when off and when my Dad had an 1850
it did too. We just lived with it. We
always tried to keep the adjustment tight
to engage so clutch doesn't slip. Probably
Not the safest method and kind of a pain.
Have to shut engine off to hook or unhook
Implement.

Hi I550:

On our tractor the PTO did not turn when not engaged. The problem I wanted to fix is clutch slipping when loaded. Our round baler half full would stop the PTO. We made some more hay and should be ready to bale tomorrow. Then we will see if I adjusted the clutch enough.

Your tip got me to this point so thanks again.

Glad you got it. It must have been really
loose. Usually 1 or 2 clicks is all that
is needed to get a good snap on engaging.
It is 55 foot pounds force on the lever,
on the 1650, probably more on 1750.

Hi:

I had been making small squares prior to this and no problem. The demand on the PTO was probably light. Now that I upgraded to round the problem showed up.

Test went well and no slippage when making the bales. Now I have to tackle the rear axle seal and I shall start a new post.
