governor not set right

Followed manual. Throttle wide open.

Edit - Oliver 1650. Year 1964 - lost this while editing.

Had a gas blockage, so inspected carb and reset floats, followed problem and corrected (blockage came from something inside the gas tank). While I was at it I checked the governor. Never thought it worked right. If getting a little tough the governor should pick up some. It didn't. Tractor would die if I didn't clutch it and give it more throttle. Other than this the tractorr runs great.

It just doesn't look right. Throttle set to idle and the rod goes right in the hole.

Stuck a piece of wire in hole of rod to show center of rod. WOW! I keep reducing the size of my pictures and they just seem to get bigger when I post here.

1/4" rod. So not a lawn mower?

Yep, not a lawn mower. Lost part of my post when editing.

Loosen the lock nut on the clevis that hooks to the carb and screw it in. I'd have to look, but I believe that
''quarter of the width of the rod'' thing is done with the throttle lever full forward at full throttle isn't it?
Do you have it pushed all the way ahead?

By the manual, yes, throttle wide open, all the way forward.

That it is so far off I'm a little leery of what might happen if adjusted for that 1/2".

You said the governor wasn't working right anyway. Try it. Keep your hand on the key and if it takes off, shut it
off.

Fired right up, no problems that I can see. Revered it up to about 2500 rpms and back to idle, right at 450 rpms.
Still don't understand about the 1/16" forward thing. Hole for the rod is fairly loose - about 1/32" at least. Rod just barely touched the front of the hole and just a tweak had the rod go in and I said "good enough."

Why it was so far out of adjustment is beyond me.

Had some Honey do things. Got back and gave the governor a test.
Normally, idling and taking off the tractor wanted to die - clutch, rev and go. Now, governor kicked in and off we went.
Did some leveling with bucket. Staying above idle, started pushing dirt and when a hump came tractor pulled down and came right back up, no dying, just kept right on going.
Me Happy :D
