1550 Quad Ring Trouble

I got the unit off of the tractor and replaced the quad ring. The gear has 2 pin marks, one across from the other I tried close to a dozen times and cant get the gear all the way down, lacks about an inch from going all the way. I tried both marks, neither worked. I think the splines arent lining up properly. I talked to an Oliver mechanic and he said to take the snap ring and bolt out and then you can see that the splines line up . The snap ring is a bear to get out, I tried half a dozen times and just had to quit for the day and try again tomorrow afternoon. Anyone else have this much trouble putting the gear back in??

I just did a 1650. I'm sure when you took it apart, it didn't come off easy and, it won't go back on easy. If you have the gears and the splines lined up, it will take a fair amount of force to get it all the way on. It fits very tight on the shaft it goes over. I used a 3/4 inch ratchet. Turn it until it gets real tight then, hit it with a good sized compost hammer so you don't marr it and tighten again. Keep doing that until it won't move any more.

I replaced the quad ring on mine twice and it still leaked. Last fall I put the whole rebuild kit in and now no leak. I think the center section was getting pressurized from the worn piston seals and forcing fluid past the ring. When I took the cylinder apart the piston slid right out under its own weight so yeah, really worn. A lot tighter with the new seals. Are you sure the gear is not all the way on the splines. Tighten the bolt good. The housing floats on the shaft and sets low. I will pull up when you put the cap on.

If you lift up on the cylinder, will it come up so the top of the gear is flush? If it does, put the cap back on. The cap holds the whole thing up. The brace bar helps, but it pretty much rides on the cap.

Thanks, I watched Chris's video. All seems right, it just won't pull down. I screwed up when I took it apart, I didn't have the wheels straight ahead, so I turned them with a bar after I had it apart, so I think the splines aren't lining up. Wondering about jacking the front end up so I can turn the wheels easy to line it up while putting it back together.

I finally got it. In the picture, the gear was lined up and all the way down. I was finally able to get the gear case raised up enough to get the cap on. Glad thats done!! Got the radiator on and hoses tightened and filled with anti freeze. Its ready for a good bath and run for a while.
