Using one 850 cca battery my starter does not spin the engine very fast.will overhauling the starter usually do it or do I need a gear reduction starter to spin the engine faster?

I wouldn't use a single 850. It's probably hard on that starter. If you have no ties to originality, get yourself one of those gear reduction starters and a single group 31 battery. Make sure all your cables are wiring are good and clean. You'll never look back. My 1655 diesel started great with that setup.

I would overhaul the starter as thats the first thing I would be checking after the cables. I have my starter off my 1755 right now cause it was not turning it as fast as I wanted. The bushings are a bit loose. Replaced the drive and cleaning the rest up. Gonna install 2 12 volt batteries in parallel. Your 850 battery still should spin it right off the bat but it wont last long.

As others have sort of indicated, you really need to find where the fault lies - if that is the case.

You give no mention of the real battery cca - just the advertised value - so the battery could be tired , not properly charged or simply lower quality than expected.

Likewise the connections may be higher resistance than they should. Battery charging may not be returning the battery to full charge. Without proper checks, all possible/likely shortcomings may well be over-looked.

You don t say whether this is an old fault or recent observation - it may just be due to short run/charge cycles in cold weather.

That said, the gear-reduction starters seem to solve some starting problems - but there is also the possibility that the injection pump is nearing overhaul/repair time?

and the very first thing is to know the battery is good. you need to do a load test on it. i am saying that if all the other things like cables and starter is good an 850 cranking amp battery will start that tractor. but it should have a 1000 amp battery in it or 2 850 that in parallel will be good. do your checks and let us know, not leave us wondering.
