88 Carb Problem

Wondering if I can get some help in diagnosis...was running my 88 RC gasser yesterday and it seemed to stumble and run out of gas. When I restarted, it began to blow a lot of black smoke and act like it was just getting flooded with gas. Couldn't restart/keep it running after a point and gave up and moved onto other things. Could the float have gotten stuck down/needle valve open and be overfilling the carb?

Yes the float could be stuck open or you may have some dirt/rust keeping the needle open

Thanks. I've had floats stick shut and tapped on the carb side to get them to drop down. Is there a quick external fix for a stuck open float or is time to open up the carb?

if the needle valve has some crap in it and not closing you can take off the inlet pipe and take out the drain plug in the bottom of the bowl and use compressed air to try and blow it back out, shooting some carb cleaner in at the same time can help. worth trying before removing the carb.

If the needle is "stuck" open it's time to clean the fuel system. Something is making it "stick" open. Compressed air and other shortcut remedies may get you running, but they're just band-aides. Tank clean? Sediment bowl clean? Fuel line clean? Inline filter new? Does the float still float? Is the needle free? Is the needle still soft?
