transmission

Hi I would like to know how to check oil level in my transmission.
Cockshutt 540 1959.Gaz engine. No hydraulic.
I push a stick through the hole on top of PTO up to the bottom of transmission and there was about 2 inches of oil at the bottom. It seems low. Can you tell if it makes sense or how I could verify my transmission oil level more effectively please.

Zen02,

Remove the trans. side level plug on side........... back from the clutch pedal. With the tractor on the LEVEL, the 80W90 gear oil should be up to that plug hole. Your PTO housing is LOW on 80W90 That housing holds 1 3/4 US gal.Remove the plug on the top left corner of the PTO housing when standing behind the tractor....

You may want to consider draining ALL the gear oiL. REMOVE THE THREE PLUGS THAT are: at bottom of PTO HOUSING, REAR END to right of the hitch assy., and bottom of the TRANS. in TOTAL 7.5 US gal.

ALL the 80W90 oil goes in at the large plug on the top left of the PTO housing...........The PTO housing will fill to the proper level and the balance of your 7.5 gals will fill the trans. and rear to the proper levels.......CHECK your trans. side level plug LEVEL before you have dumped in 7 gal So you do NOT overflow and waste your valuable oil.

Hi and ty for answering Phil. I have a bucket of TDH oil I was using for another tractor. Is it ok to use it or I should buy 80W90 oil.

Zen02,

The original COCKSHUTT spec. was EP90 Gear Oil(extreme pressure). Your TDH is lighter weight oil and is NOT recommended for your COCKSHUTT 540 Tractor.....The correct oil is green will smell funny like heavy oil.

Noted. I checked the level from that hole on the side and it was about an inch lower than that hole. I will fill up to the hole for now with EP90 and will recheck after some hours of operation to see if there is any leak before replacing the whole 7 gallons. The oil in it is light brown color.
Ty again.

The light Brown oil may have a lot of moisture in it(water). I would use you left over Trans. Hydraulic Oil....just to get you to a NEEDED complete gear oil change.....You will certainly not want to freeze up your 540 in nasty real cold winter weather.

Hi:

Light brown is the color I am used to seeing with standard 80/90 gear oil. Aroma is quite distinct. I would use a siphon to pull some out. Let it sit a day and check for water or fillings.

Will use TDH for few hours to see if any leak then and will change oil completely. I called 4 dealers around here for EP90 and all they have is 80W90 type of oil. Is it good enough as replacement or I should keep searching? Ty.

Zen02,

Unfortunately, Extreme Pressure 90 Gear Oil is gone forever.

Choose your 80W90 carefully. YOU want Color green AND pungent gear oil smell.........Do NOT buy it IF it is NOT as I described.....Some marketers 80W90 is thin, low viscosity, smells like motor oil and looks like it too!!...............TRACTOR SUPPLY 80W90 completely FAILS my test!!!

Truck repair shops would have the right 80W90 on inventory in bulk.........I would NOT invest in in synthetic gear oil for your COCKSHUTT 540 Tractor application.
