Oliver 77 and 1 way cylinders

Good evening all. We added an aftermarket 3 point hitch to my son's 77 that he is restoring for 4H. It came with 1 way cylinders. We have it hooked up to the left, factory valve, front port. The back port of the left valve is capped off. The hitch lifted up, no issues when he pushed the lever forward. When he pulled the lever back, it would not lower. I hung a 100lb weight from each arm, held the lever back and both he and I stood on the arms also. Still will not go down. Seems like I am missing something very simple. Suggestions, please. Thanks to all.

The simplest solution is to replace the one way with a double acting cylinder, Olivers do not work well with single acting cylinders.

Did you happen to shut the tractor off and try? We did this if we couldn't lower wagons on some makes of tractors.

Matthies, yep. Thought of that too and tried it with no luck. Here is a picture of how we have it now.

thank-you

I do not remember just how to do it but there is a procedure on how to plump the outlet for one way cylinders. It works very well for loaders with one way so should work just as well for your three point. Two way one a three point could cause problems as some implements do not like down pressure.

On the left side of the pump where the hoses connect, is there a round swivel on one of them? That has to be turned to the right position doesn't it guys? I don't remember if there was more to it than just turning that to the right position or not?

Try this old post. I had posted a picture that I'd copied somewhere. I don't know anything about it, whether it worked or not or what the valve was for.

You need what is called a "momentary restrictror" and an owner's or a repair manual to tell how to install it will replace the fitting that you have plugged and use a short hose to return oil to reservoir.

Thanks to everybody. I went ahead and drilled out the relief holes at the opposite ends of the cylinders and welded 1/2 female bungs over those holes, hooked those to the other side of the valve and ... now he has two way cylinders. Raises and lowers great now.

Thanks again.
