Super 88 diesel loosing prime

My super 88 had a electric lift pump on it. For some reason they just wouldn't last so I got a kit from korves and rebuilt a mechanical one. Replaced the diaphragm check valves and spring. When I first put it on it would loose its prime. It sat 2 to 3 months and started up without any assistance. The next day it started and quit atleast 5 times before it smoothed out. When I use the mechanical hand lever it has resistance for 3 to 4 pumps them moves freely.
Any ideas why its loosing prime? Pretty sure the check valves are in right and dont know if that would make a difference. Thank you

How much supply system pressure is at the hydraulic head inlet? That should be about 3-5 PSI, if so the valves are in right. There MIGHT be some trapped air in the
final filter that needs bled off too.

Hard to figure how it would lose its prime since the tank is higher
than the pump.

Is the restrictor fitting on the return line still intact?

I dont really have a way to check pressure. I will have to look into that.
Something I forgot to mention is that it didn't have the small filter by the pump but I added one. I haven't replaced the final filter yet but plan to. Thanks for the info. I may not get back to it for a few days.

Following this

I also rebuilt a transfer pump for a 550D with that kit (albeit with
the sediment bowl attached to the transfer pump) and had the
exact same symptoms as you are. I put in an electric pump but
would really like to get back to a mechanical pump

I put a kit in another one with out any problems. It had a different style of check valves that weren't replaceable. I would think the check valves wouldn't cause this though. With the hand lever it feels like it's not returning all the way. But then it worked fine a few days ago and yesterday it ran after the air got worked out. I may try it again today.

.. With the hand lever it feels like it's not returning all the way..

If the internal lever on the pump is on the high point of the
camshaft, there will be limited travel on the hand lever. Bump the
engine a little and try again.

I will give that a try but I get a few pumps prior. Seems more like a suction thing.

On another note when my tractors sit I usually give them a few pumps when I walk by or prior to starting. Seems to help. Anyone else do that?
