I bought an Oliver 88 the other day, I dont have it hauled home yet. It hasnt been run for 3or 4 years. Ive never had an Oliver before. Can somebody explain how the hydraulic system works and how to use the hydraulic controls. It has an f11 loader run off of the pto. The previous owner said he only used it for a loader tractor and has never attempted to use the hydraulic system.
Thanks for any info.

Well first thing I would do is check the oil level. The oil can leak away while the tractor is just setting for that long a time. Also you can find variations in those hydraulic units so we need to know if the tractor came with a hydraulic unit or a hydraulic unit was added later. Send me your phone number and I can walk you through it. J.

When I get the tractor home, I will have to look it over closer. I was just curious how the system worked since the previous owner said he had never attempted to use the hydraulics and did not even know what all the levers were for.

If it has levers on the sides of the pump housing and on the steering column, the ones on the pump are manual levers that run the remotes. The ones on the column do the same thing and more, but most likely don't work. Those are electrical switches and activate solenoids on the inside of the pump housing to run the remotes as well. They also hook up to cords that go to an Oliver Hydra Lectric cylinder to set the depth stop from the tractor seat on the go.

Do like Schweibert said and check the oil. There is a cap on the top of the system that has a dipstick on it.

If the previous owner did not maintain it, the pump may be toast.
