Oliver 550 Z-split

I split the 550 today to work on the PTO clutch. Pretty quick and painless, after I pulled the one bolt I missed in the split. The mice had made a big nest inside, but it seems that most things are intact. It will need new clutch plates and a new throwout collar. It was surprising dry inside, so I have to decide what I am going to do with the seals and gaskets. FYI I suspend the front of the tractor with an overhead chain hoist and the back of the tractor on a floor jack. This is the easiest way I have found to split a 550.

Rich, I would by all means replace the seal behind the pto spider while you have it apart. I'm pretty sure Korves have a seal kit for the pto. It will have some seals for the early Super 55 that you won't use if it's like the one's I've seen. HTH Kent

I know now why there were no leaks, there was very little oil in the transmission, so new seals it is.
