1850 3 speed leaking

Hi guys. I have an 1850 diesel with a 3 speed that all of the
sudden is leaking past the seal behind the chain coupler
sprocket. I was driving it out of cold storage to my shop. Im
in Minnesota so its been pretty cold. Is there any chance
that it will quit leaking when it warms up? What would
cause the seal to fail? Before I bought the tractor it was
rebuilt by an old Oliver mechanic about 8 years ago. Im
assuming I have to pull the motor to get at the 3 speed and
the seal ? Ive done my fair share of fixing stuff but would
appreciate any help on how to do this. Is that seal internal so I
would have to tear the entire 3 speed down? Thanks for any
help.

What am I looking for? Where is this plug. Is it near the seal? Thanks for your advice. I will poke around tomorrow to see if I can see anything.

I crawled back under the tractor tonight. I see where you are talking about the counter shaft. It looks like a little box with a line coming out of it. I think the leak is above it because the chain coupler is throwing the oil around. Can I just pull the motor and hydraul together and replace the seal with out taking everything apart? By looking at my book, it looks like I Take the chain off, unlock the spammer nut and pull the sprocket off. Can I then just unbolt what the book calls the clutch housing to replace the seal? Where do I find the spanner wrench that the book is talking about? Sorry if this is too many questions. I appreciate any help.

Most of us would separate the the hydra power from the engine while out of the tractor unless it just had a clutch job.

The 3 speed and clutch were done right before I bought it. The engine and injection pump was too. It was a good find. I know the guy who sold it to me really well. Where do I hook my engine hoist to pull it out even? I have a big hoist so it shouldnt be a problem.

Sorry for all the questions but now I have another one. I let the tractor warm up in my shop over night and then ran the tractor for probably a 1/2 hour shifting it up and down. It now doesnt leak a drop. How is that possible? It was -14 f the night before I started it to move it to my shop. Is it possible that the cold stiff fluid pressurized too much and pushed it past the seal. Now that its warm it doesnt. I hate fix something that isnt leaking now. Ha ha. But I pull a 6 row planter in the spring with it.

He just uploaded it this week. As for your leak, it's possible the seal is flexing in the temps, or the drain plug might not be tight, who knows... is your fluid level correct?
