update on red stripe 2-105

Went out and checked it out this evening. It is a 1979 based on the serial number. It has an engine oil leak in one of the cooler lines running to the bottom of the radiator. I started it and it seems to run good, no blue smoke like the 2-85 next to it, but was warm from being run earlier. A can of starting fluid was still in the cab. It also has a bad fuel leak at the injector pump and as best I can tell, it is near the top of the injector pump. It is so bad that the tool box below it and in the middle of the frame was covered with fuel on the inside. It had a cover on it that was latched. The last thing was that when I walked up to it, I found the hired man adding hydraulic fluid to the system in the back. I asked if he had ever removed the trany oil level plug to see if it was going into the rear end. He said no but he said the owner knew it had to go in to be fixed. He put 2 gallons in to get it up to level. The odd thing is it shows only 2220 hours and the 3 point hitch and drawbar seem to reflect the low hours. However they had a shaft in the upper pto port and I asked if they ever ran anything off of it. The hired man said an irrigation pump. I will be passing on this one since the hired man also said it was repainted. With updated hood and side panels.

On a side note, there was a John Deere irrigation pump with the radiator and front hood from a White 2-105 at the auction. Looks like they found a place to use the old items. A guy who knew the farmer said he was known for always taking short cuts

Sounds like you looked at mine. LOL

I had to replace both of those cooler lines. The originals were made to sweat oil of they start to leak through. I had oil running right down the frame. It leaks fuel up at the top and behind the injector pump too. I'm assuming that I have a copper crush washer leaking where a line bolts to the pump, but haven't looked close enough to tell for sure.

That's interesting that the two are so similar. I wonder if the oil cooling lines have been updated or if I should just go to a Parker hose store and have one made. As for the injector pump I hope that is all it is. Yes I ended up with the tractor. It ran without smoke, started right up when warm and I hope the it is simply the lines. I know my other 2-105 is a bear on a cold morning. You basically have one chance or you are getting the either out. I know it has a problem with the Pto leaking but I have rebuilt those already. What I don't know is if there are any other issues. We will see. Gets delivered next week and basically goes into winter storage until next spring.

Your comments also have me thinking I should replace both engine oil cooler lines at the same time. Should then last another 40 years, right?

I bought a couple of cooler lines off one in the local parts yard. They're smooth on the outside where mine had a rough texture to them. I don't know if they're some that somebody had made, or if the replacement hoses are made different than the originals. At 66, mine won't have to last too much longer to outlast me. LOL

Mine sure doesn't start as easy as my 1850 by any stretch. It has a thermo start on it like my 1365 has, but doesn't work quite as well as the one on the 1365 does. I don't know if it's maybe just because it's a 6 cylinder and has a lot more manifold to heat. As long as I use it on cold mornings, it starts OK. I don't like using ether. If it's below 20 or so, I'll plug it in.

Oddly we are the same age. I am not planning on quitting doing what I enjoy but I share a comment my wife and I had after going to check out the auction the night before. She said it sure seemed odd to see all the equipment lined up for the auction. I said that will probably be what will happen with my Olivers after I am gone.
