1550 Plowing

I went to a plow day today, pictures are on Tractor Talk. I ran in 3rd with 3-14's and had to go to under drive quit a bit, some of that black dirt was tough!! When running in direct, there was a lot of blue smoke from the crankcase vent, Just before lunch, the oil pressure fell to 20#s and started jumping all over. I checked it at noon and added a quart and a half to fill it. 4 times, I pulled the hydra power lever to under and it stopped moving, had to step on the clutch and then I could feel it grab and go. That kinda confirmed my thoughts on the motor, but I wasn't planning on a hydra power also!! Will a over/under fit in a 1550?? I'll take my chances with a used one before buying a new sprag clutch. Still a good day!!!

We have 5 Oliver's at the farm ...1850 D..three 1850 G..and a 1650 G. So far three of the hydra power units have failed and have been removed and replaced with eliminator kits. (straight drive shafts) That still leaves 6 forward gears and two in reverse. None of ours need to plow or chisel plow anymore so not having the hydra power doesn't matter. And not having a tractor that can free wheel on the hills is a safety factor with hired help AND it makes the next clutch job a lot easier. No more need to pull the engine. I have all the part numbers for an eliminator kit if you want them.

I can't speak to whether or not an over/under from a late 1650 or 1655 would 'fit', but no 1550s or 1555s left the factory with an over/under as far as I know. I don't think it was even an option in them.

The hydra power drives and the over/under 3 speeds are quite a bit tougher in my opinion than IHs torque amplifier. We have tractors with both. Doesnt seem like as many Oliver guys have many issues with the 2 and 3 speeds compared to the number of torque amplifier problems. Could just be because of more IHs out there. Just my thoughts and opinions. I was just at a buddies yesterday and he was showing me his 1800A that he put a Cummins repower in . Tractor had no 2 speed but he found a good one for around 400 dollars and put it in. I know they are expensive to rebuild, but I would not delete it. Way too handy to have the gear selections for many different situations. There are a couple guys here in the Oliver photo adds that deal with a lot of parts tractors. Id call them.

I sold my 1975- 2-105 that was on its 4th set of 18.4x38 tires, hours unknown15,000+ and the over-under 3 speed only had a rear seal replaced in all the years I owned it, bought it new, sold at retirement sale Dec 2018. All row crop farmer.

I'm not sure if the same unit works in the small frame and large frame tractors. I have a spare that I think came from an 1800 that I could put in or rob parts from. Not going to delete it, it's as handy as a pocket on a shirt.

over /under from a 1650/1655 will fit the 1550 as I did this for a friend. He really likes it over the two speed. 1750 up has a big shaft and different bell housing and has to be made to fit.Use a pusher nut and short piece of copper tubing flared on one end to connect the cooler lines to and if need be a compressed ferrule to hold the hose on the copper. the chain coupler is the same and the shifter can be made to work.
