Super 55 12 Volt

Recently acquired Super 55 has a 12 volt conversion using a Delco 10S1. This has one heavy wire running to main post, then a wire running from main post to right tab terminal where regulator plugs in. Also has a resistor from the right tab terminal to left tab terminal right beside it. My problem is that it charges just fine but that resistor is constantly warm to the touch all the time and apparently runs battery down over time. What do you folks suggest should be changed? I have not taken alternator apart to check status of alternator internals just think needs to be possibly wired differently. Any help appreciated, Thanks.

The left (excite)terminal (marked 1) should only have power when the key switch is ON.

If no key switch (diesel), power can be routed through an oil pressure switch so it's only powered when the engine is running/has oil pressure.

It's a good idea to have a resistor (around 50 Ohms), an idiot light or a diode in that lead.

The right (voltage sense) terminal (marked 2) can be HOT all the time without draining the battery. It may be simply connected to the alternator's large output stud. If more accurate voltage regulation at the battery is desired it CAN be routed to the battery cable terminal on the starter solenoid.

wore out gives the theory. Simply disconnect resistor from from right tab (#2 terminal) and connect to switched wire that goes to coil. Leave #1 end of resistor connected.

The way it is now the #1 is still hot when engine off, keeping regulator turned on and runs down battery.
