60 Steering

My next project includes trying to tighten the steering on a '46 60. Referencing the exploded views of steering box it looks like taking off the upper nut allows either removal or addition of various shims to tighten the slop in steering. (U-Joints are all new or tight) My question is am I removing shims or do I need to add (buy some) shims to accomplish this? Have any of you done this in the past and have any suggestions as to how many to add or subtract to tighten?
Also is this much the same methodology on a recently acquired Super 55 with even more slop in steering not moving arms?
