So I am working on a Oliver 1850. Serial numbers puts it in the 1967 model year. The engine serial number on the pad beside the injection pump has been stamped by what looks like a series of center punch marks. Any ideas why this was done? Most engines are stamped with a stamping set and I am curious if this was aftermarket, warranty engine, or from some other application. Photo is included.

That pad is usually stepped, if I recall correctly. That's a large surface. Maybe not the original application as you suspect.

Don't know. I've got a White combine engine in mine and it's stamped just like the original tractor engine was. Sometimes it's just a mystery why people do what they do.

Could have been stamped by a wrecking yard. Good chance the engine had another life in the past. Not a bad sign but more of a testament to its durabilty.

My search has led me to assume this is a combine engine as the pictured pad is not notched out as original engines seemed to be. I think the top number is 354 and below is u 5 ? ?? 0. The u is where it was made and the last number of zero indicates non turbo. I just cant figure why is was stamped this way unless they were replacing a tag that was damaged. Thus the junk yard explanation seems plausible. Im gonna tear it down this week and see whats inside. Maybe the rear seal and a couple other factory mods will give me more info.
