oliver 1850 gasket sealer

I have the 3point/hydraulic unit off the top of my 1850 and am changing gaskets due to bad leaks. Was wondering if I need to put some type of sealer on the gaskets when I put the unit back on? It had some type of blue silicone around the gaskets that came off pretty easy but I know a lot of transmission / hydraulic fluid will eventually eat out some sealers so wanted to see what would be recommended because don't want to take this off again. Thanks.

We use a good heavy grease on both sides of the gasket for the hydraulic housings, top cover and pto units. Works really well if you have to pull it apart again you can usually Re-use the gasket. Mr.J Schwibert gave me that tip a while back and it works good. You definitely do not want to use silcone/rtv near any hydraulic system!!

Would coating the gasket with Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket work good? It holds up for high temps. If I did try grease, what do you use?

Yes aviation cement would work, I use that for certain applications such as water pump gaskets or freeze plugs. The gasket would definitely be destroyed if you would take it apart again but hopefully you will not have to do that! I use valvoline red hi temp wheel bearing grease, I have a lot of it and it pretty universal.

use the good stuff, permatex high tack sealer in a spray can. the gasket sticks to the part and is easily removed if need be. stay away from the cement stuff. and use grease when nothing else on hand. i been using permatex since the 1970's .

Itt has been at least 25 years since I done one, but remember they also had a sequence on how to tighten those unit.
