If any of the bolt is sticking out from the head, Heat them up, pour some cold water on them while still hot. That may help. We used to loosen brake bleeders that way. But the way I have had the best luck is to slide a not over the broken piece and weld it using a wire welder. Easy to control the welding process that way. I have done the same thing when broke off flush with the head. Using a wire welder and little short bursts try to get the weld build up to stand out from the head surface. Then place a nut over it and weld it to the weld build up. The heat generated welding helps a great deal.

Arnie, have you ever tried a flat washer then a nut? I've had fantastic luck welding a flat washer to the broken bolt then welding a nut to the washer. You can weld around the outside of the nut to get more surface.

No I haven't. I'll remember to try that. Before I got the wire welder I used to that with 1/16 rod and a stick welder lying on my back under a Chevy pickup trying to keep from having to take the exhaust manifolds off. I don't do that no more. Too old. Thanks for the tip.
