1550 Steering

The power steering unit under the dash on the new to me 1550 is leaking oil, I think it is original but can't say for sure. It's hooked onto the pto generator and parked closest to the door in front of the 1850 diesel with the blade on it. When it first came here and got cold, the front wheels wouldn't turn until it warmed the oil a little bit. I changed hydraulic oil and filter and that helped, I backed it out yesterday at 6 below to plow the driveway. I could turn the steering wheel but the front wheels were very slow to turn and just kind of wobbled when I was backing it out. I let it run a while and it steered OK putting it back in the shed. Too cold to mess with it, but I'm thinking that the orbit motor under the dash needs replaced. I read years ago somewhere that the orbit motor out of a MF combine would work as a replacement without too much difficulty. I have a MF 550 combine setting here waiting for me to scrap out, I'm thinking that the orbit motor from the combine should work in the 1550, any thoughts???

I think it depends if the combine has open or closed center hydraulic. Your 1550 uses an open center type system. I believe your right though you could use them steering motor from a combine. I would think its a chrylnn style steering motor.

1550 will still be a Saginaw steering motor unless it has been converted to a charlynn at some point in its life. If thats the case you have 2 options. Find a used motor like you are already thinking, or buy a charlynn conversion kit which is a little pricy. Your other option for a source for a used motor is if you can find a parts 525 535 or 545 combine. They used the Saginaw motor as well. The only thing you would have to do is drill the holes for the tilt lock (the boss is already there on the bottom of the motor but the holes were never drilled because the combines used a different style lock) and use the column off your tractor. Combine steering motor would be your best bet for replacement because compared to a tractor, a combine would have a lot less use on it.

I think one from a Massey 300 is the same, can't say on the 550. Early New Idea Uni System was the same too I think. There's only two places it could leak and neither one means it needs to be replaced. It's either a line leaking or the seal on the shaft. That seal is available and cheap. The kit was $32 last time I bought one. You don't even have to pull the hydramotor out of the tractor to change it. You can sit right on the seat and do the job.

I'd agree with Randy. Clean it put good and see where it's actually leaking. Could also be your hydraulic system is weak. My steering was slow and jerky at low RPM. Turned out to be the pressure was low because the pump seals were blown.

Ford 4000, 5000 used the Saginaw steering too.
