Mission Creep

At least I think that is what it is called when reality goes on past intentions. Working on my 88. It had a 77 motor in it when I bought it and always wanted to get a 88 engine for it. I looked for many years before I finally found one, it was supposed to have come out of a running tractor and I paid way too much for it. Got it home and set it on a pallet in the shed, just never had the time or ambition to start in on it. I would turn it a little from time to time so it wouldn't get stuck. Finally decided it would be wise to put some oil in the cylinders. When I took the spark plugs out, they were pretty nasty looking, 3 were really oil fouled, not a good sign! A friend called a couple of months ago, he has a buddy that is selling a good 88 motor out of his pulling tractor for $250. I bought it and started in on the 88. The hydraulic has leaked oil into the transmission every since I got it, so I figured I would pull the Hydraulic unit and fix that while I was working on it. I got the motor out and looked at the shaft coming out of the front of the transmission. Not good, the splines are nearly wore off. I guess I will be tearing into the transmission after I get the motor back in and running. I wonder how many more things I will find before it's done???

LOL Sounds like it might be time to look for a good one and make a donor out of that one. BTDT.

But look at all the fun you are having and knowing you will have a nice old tractor when finished. Have a good one and stay safe.

I thought that this one WAS a good one. I've used it a lot with no issues. It's a 1951 and so am I, how do you know for sure that the next one will be any better or worse than this one. I have seen nice looking tractors that were totally wore out but looked great.

Ya, just made me feel good to know I'm not the only one to have a "what have I gotten myself in to?" moment.

The good news is, the shafts are readily available and you will have the hydraulic unit for other reasons, so not a big time impact for your project. While you are looking, take a look at the transmission coupler that goes onto the input shaft.

You are making me scared to start on my 770. Only share happy stories in the future LOL btw -4 is cold but I am looking at -40 tonight. That’s really cold. It’s worse this year because my garage is filled with my dead skid steer and other junk. Have to start the tractor every 3 hours to keep it from turning into a block of ice.

What's the deal with the 6 bladed fan? My dad once had a 77 with a super 88 engine in it. It had an industrial clutch in it and also a 6 bladed fan. It would sometimes over heat. And sometimes the clutch couldn't hold it either.

On my 770 I took clutch hubs from the removed 2 speed clutch onto each uf those splined shafts and welded a piece of pipe between them and have used it for 30 years.

I don't know, it was on it when I got it. The 77 motor set back farther, I'm guessing somebody put it on to pull more air. It's a direct bolt up, no fan clutch.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. Right now we are going thru the same thing with a 1850. Took it apart last year because of a bad input shaft bearing and a clutch job. Well once I got it apart that's when the first "what did I get into" was said. It ended up being really bad, every bearing was bad in the transmission and rear end, beside the input shaft, counter shaft and main pto shaft being bad. The decision was made to find a good donor tractor to use the trans and rear end. I found one this summer after swapping the tub over it still needed the input shaft and bearings. Now that all those parts are in, I decided to go thru the engine and freshen it up since it was out of the tractor and everything that I found up until now, showed that there was a major lack of maintaince thru this tractors life plus a lot of hack repairs. So now every part of the tractor will have been touched and rebuilt or repaired. I am also going to paint it since it is apart and the paint is awful on the sheet metal. So I do know what you mean about how far is to far and what did I get myself into. I just keep thinking that its not any good not running or usable and they are not making anymore Oliver's anytime soon!!

I've got some work to do on my 88 when I have some extra cash. I would not mind a donor for a few things. Nothing major but the governor needs to be rebuilt and it has an 880 radiator which does not allow for use of the cover over the cap.
