The guy who owned the milk truck that I drove used to flush the engine with fuel oil when he'd change oil. He'd drain the oil, put in a gallon of fuel oil and run it for thirty seconds or so. Never blew one up. I never had the guts to try it.
When my son was at auto diesel school he had an instructor who revved a V8 to about 8000 then shoved a garden hose in the intake running water in to it at full flow. He didn't hurt that one either.
