HG-68 6 Volt to 12 Volt conversion

I have a 1951 Oliver HG-68. I am interested in converting to 12V positive ground. How are you mounting the alternator? Is a bracket needed? A local shop said they could convert my existing 6V generator to a 12v generator. I don’t have a price on that but I figure it’s not cheep. Wold that be a good idea? I was told my starter will be ok. What have you experienced?

I changed my Oliver 66 and 77 to 12v generators. Any Delco generator and regulator will bolt right up to the bracket and the wiring is the same, no cobble jobs. The one on my 77 is off of a 1600. I don't know what the one on the 66 is off of. I bought it out of the flea market area at the national Oliver show a few years back. It's Oliver green, the regulator was on it. It worked as soon as I hooked it up. All of the Oliver diesels were 12v, the gassers were from 1957 to 65 or so.

If you want to stay with positive ground the alternator you buy will cost you 3 or 4 time that of if you switch the ground to negative and switch the wires on the coil so it is then negative ground

You'd have to build your own bracket. That's why I say, a 12v generator would be a direct bolt up and wire up. It wouldn't be flopping around like a knob on an outhouse door.

I am seeing 12V generators online at auto parts stores. But no specs are given. Diameter, length, spindle diameter. If you know of one that will work could you post a link to it?

Thanks for everyones help!

Any Delco that's made for a tractor application will be the same dimensions as a 6v. I would get one for an earlier tractor, say
pre 1963. The later ones might not be drilled and tapped for the saddle type regulator. I've got a half a dozen old Delco 12v
around here, they're all the same size physically. You said you know a starter shop that'll convert yours to 12v, have you asked
them about price? They should even have a rebuilt 12v or be able to get you the right one if they're any good at all.
