How difficult would it be to convert a set back front axle to a normal front axle on an 1850? I assume the front axle is the same for both models, and only the bracket between the axle and tractor would need to be changed. Am I correct?

Set back front axle is completely different from the regular wide front. Nothing except the wheels and hubs will interchange. You need the entire axle/bolted assembly to make the switch.

I would have one to swap out with you if you are interested. I am looking for a set back complete unit. Located in central Wis.

I used to have a set back axle but it was damaged. I know there is a bolster in the front and the rear support on the regular axle that bolts on. I can't remember what had to come off with the set back. Also not sure but the tie rods should work between the two. One axle has the ends point backward and the other forward. You will need to pull the power steering gearbox to make it easier and I would check the box seals and shaft bearings while you have it apart.

Even the steel lines to the cylinder are different. The cylinder sits the opposite direction on the set backs than it does with the row crop wide front and narrow front. With the set back, the lines bend around and go in from the front, on the others they come in from the back.

You're the authority then. I thought they turned it around because the steering arm comes out the front.

thanks Oliverkid, I didn't think we needed to switch the steering motor or the lines at the motor. we simply changed them by the top of the fuel tank near the front console. No messing with replacement lines.
