Identifying Oliver 1650 Ignition System

Oliver 1650 wouldn't stay running. I bought a rebuild kit for the carburetor and performed that task.

I put the tractor on a charger to get the battery up to full charge. I forgot and left the ignition key on for a very long time. I'm pretty sure the points were now bad. They were very pitted. I cleaned and adjusted the points and tested for spark. I receved spark for about 4 turns and then nothing.

I ordered an electronic ignition system from a supplier. I have the plugs changed and set to .025. A new 55K coil without resistor. I bought a resistor for the new coil thinking I needed it. However, the old coil doesn't have a built in resistor either. I'm thinking the system has a resistor already installed somewhere. I've looked and can't find anything but when checking the voltage before teardown I was getting 5.6v.

I installed the resistor I bought right beside the new coil and hooked it up. Do I need that resistor? I'm thinking no.

Next, the old coil had a sticker that said MSD ignition. I bought a electronic ignition, see picture, but now that I have the distributor apart there is no way this kit goes in there.

There is no vacuum on the distributor and I think it is an after market distributor at this point. I was thinking it was an MSD distributor but can't find any documentation on the web. I'm probably way off base!

I already have the points and condenser removed. They are setting in there for a before visual. I just don't see how the performix ignition I bought will go into the distributor I have.

To sum up:

1. Do I need the resistor I bought installed?

2. Can anyone identify the distributor on this Oliver 1650 and the correct Electronic Ignition kit required?

3. Or, is this the correct kit and I'm not seeing something?

4. Is .025 the correct gap for new plugs with new 55K Coil and the correct Electronic Ignition?

I will greatly appreciate all input.

I have determined that I have a Mallory Model YL distributer. That distributer is not listed in my 1650 parts catalogue but is listed in the tractorpartsasap catalogue. I have since ordered the correct Pertronix Electronic Ignition Kit.

Next question. The old coil is a 12V External Resistor Required Model #1303. On the bottom it has the numbers, 1013. I bought a 55K V Coil external resistor required already. However, the tractorpartsasap catalogue states that a 40KV Flame Thrower Coil with internal resistance is needed.

This is very confusing to me. What is the correct answer?

If you buy the pertronix flamethrower coil, you will not need the resistor. I have a pertronix in a mallory in my 1650 with their coil and no external resistor. Works just fine.

" I'm thinking the system has a resistor already installed somewhere. I've looked and can't find anything but when checking the voltage before teardown I was getting 5.6v."

According to diagram I have of a 1650 gas, coming off the I (ignition) terminal of the ignition/starter switch there is a "white, purple and orange - 2.0 to 2.4 ohm resistance wire (spliced to white wire inside harness)" This white wire goes to coil to supply operating voltage and to the starter solenoid to bypass the resistance when starter is engaged to give hotter starting spark.

5.6v at input to coil with points closed would indicate the resistance wire is connected and is working.
