550 pto shaft

I pulled the pto shaft out the back to replace the o ring. That pin was a bear to get out!!! It looks like it has been broken off, it was only thru one side of the coupler. Parts book says it is 1/4x2", can I get away with putting a 1/4" grade 8 bolt and nut on it or will it interfere with something inside??

Or just order one and wait for it to get here??

I believe it's just a roll pin. Go to your local auto parts or hardware store. I would not put a bolt in there.

To each his own, I put a bolt in ours and it seems to have worked just fine. After installing the bolt I hit the end with a hammer to distort the threads so that it wouldn't come apart easily, I also egged the bolt hole in the coupler a small amount to allow the splines to carry the load not the bolt. I did this because the splines on the shaft were worn and the original roll pin had broken.

It's not a regular roll pin, it is solid with grooves cut in the side of it.
