Greetings, and thank you for taking a minute to review my problem.
I have a 1959 Oliver 550 Diesel with power steering. When I filled up the power steering reservoir, the fluid shot up out under the steering wheel cap. From a previous post, I checked to see that all hose/line connections were tight. The steering shaft is loose in the column and can be moved a surprising amount. When turning the steering wheel, the steering shaft raises up (or lowers back down depending on direction) approximately half and inch without moving the control arms. Once movement of the control arms is achieved after nearly 110 degrees of spinning the steering wheel, it is extremely hard to turn the wheels (even while moving).
I am not excited about the cost of a new control valve assembly, or new steering shaft, but I could see how these are wearable parts and the free play of the shaft in the column leads me to believe it has worn. Thoughts? Thank you for any help you can provide!
