Oliver 1655 PTO Help

1655 PTO leaking (think it just a 540). Pulled output shaft and I can see the plastic plug....wondering if the leak is farther back than O-ring and seal. I have the O-ring and seal...does that usually fix the leak? If not, can I pull the entire PTO unit without pulling the long shaft first. I read somewhere about removing the snap ring on the long shaft and pulling that first, but it seems it could come out all together without removing the long shaft snap ring.

First, is it leaking around the spanner nut or inside where the shaft goes? I have a '64 1650 and it had neither the seal nor the cap on it original. I put the cap on first, still leaked, then installed the seal and got it sealed up. It just depends on where your leak is. I learned on the first time to put some black RTV in that cap before putting it on because it still leaked around that cap a little when I did it the first time.

If you have the dual speed... My 2-70 leaked pretty bad. I took it out and found the seal between the 540 and 1000 gears was crushed in there. Replaced that and it was fine. It leaked through the center shaft area then.

On pulling it, I wouldn't recommend pulling it without pulling the long shaft. It's not that big of a deal to pull the long shaft and if you don't pull pretty straight, you run the risk of bending the long shaft. I think it can be done, and yes, that snap ring is a bear sometimes, but I would just pull it.
