880 Transmission Oil

When I got the 880, the rubber around the gear shift lever was in 2 pieces, so I got a new one and put on. This morning I drained about 11 gallons of chocolate milk out of the transmission and rear end. Gonna let it set and drain all day before refilling. Can you still get thick 80w90 gear oil?? The stuff at Farm and Fleet is red and pours like 20wt motor oil. I guess it's alright, but just seems to be too thin. I was on a tractor ride Saturday and talked to a guy I know with a super 77, he said he added a gallon of Lucas Oil Treatment to the rear end and it quieted it down a lot, I think I'll try that and see if it helps. The magnet on both drain plugs have a lot of metal shavings on both of them, it's probably never been changed since new. Chris

I have the same issue. Got this at local auto parts to change out 770. TSC carries VP branded pails. This stuff pours out like hyd oil. trans gears are noticeably louder. This new oil is not the oil of old.

I dunno. My cars take 20 weight and my TSC Traveler 80/90 gear oil pours much thicker.

Maybe add a little corn starch to thicken it up????? I kid I kid...

A mechanic at the dealership I get parts from showed me a bulletin a while back saying that since the additive that was used in these tractors when new is no longer available, on a tractor with a power booster, you should use a hytran type of oil. If it doesn't have a power booster, you should use 80W90 oil. I've been using the hytran type for over 20 years in my 880.

Just flushEd a transmission yesterday due to emulsion and added 2 pails of 80 - 90 Gear lube from Walmart. Half the price of gear oil from the farm fuel agent. Stinks and pours just like it did when I was kid.
