1655 clutch

While I've got the engine out. I'm thinking about changing the clutch. I've had no problems with it.What should I be looking for to indicate future problems?

Make sure that pressure plate is set correctly for the thickness of the clutch! I put a new one in my 1600, got it all together and it wouldn't release. I had to take it back apart. I just put another one in it and had Clutch Dynamics make a new clutch, get a new pressure plate and resurface the flywheel. I put a new one in the 1550 a few years back too and had to weld a nut on the end of the clevis in the linkage to get that one to release. The throw out bearing went out on that one last month and I had to tear in to it again. When I got it together, it wouldn't release at all. I got in to the I&T manual this time and found out how to adjust the pressure plate. If you aren't going to take the whole thing someplace and have it set up for you, at the very least follow the instructions in the I&T to adjust the pressure plate.

You'll have to take it to a clutch shop that can do it. They just use a big grind stone to grind them back flat. Be careful if you have it done while you wait and have a bed liner in your pickup. The guys at Clutch Dynamics said they've seen them melt liners if they load them right up after they grind them. LOL

With a :button" clutch as the clutch disk wears so does the flywheel and the pressure plate. All 3 need to be carefully inspected and the counter b0re in the flywheel need to be at the correct dimension.
