Valve clearance for a 310 Waukesha

I thought I would ask what should be the correct intake and exhaust valve adjustment for the tappets. My mechanic said I shouldn't have to adjust it if I kept the rack intact and attached to the head as he took it off. We had a bad head gasket and I disagreed with him. The rack had to be removed so it could be properly torqued. I also know that the various secondary publications can be incorrect or not up to date. This is not the engine block with the built in oil cooler but it is a turbo'd diesel on an Oliver 1855. Thanks, just trying to do it right.

you are totally correct!, and so why does the mechanic say that? any time the head is off valve set happens,.. and on a retorque valve set
happens again. when you squeeze head gasket you are decreasing the valve clearance. i dont have the clearance, but if you want to show him
torque the head and then take the valve measurements , that will prove him wrong.

when I worked for a massey/former Oliver dealer we were told valve settings for all waukesha engines should be .022 intake and exhaust.I
use that without problems, I think manuals said .020 and .030.Your choice I guess

I very seldom adjust valves after replacing a headgasket. I've been a diesel mechanic in field service for over 20 years and never had an issue. That being said, I put all pushrods back in location they came out of and make sure they are kept in order. That has more of an impact than a gasket being replaced. The crush on old gasket and new gasket will be close enough to not matter. If head is replaced, surfaced, or liners are replaced then it matters. But, if your ever unsure, go ahead and adjust them.

The 030 for all the valves was part of the changes to improve starting as were other things for the1650 & 1750 tractors.
