proper wiring on the starter celenoid

happy fathers day fellas. im finishing up a complete restoration on an 1967 1550 gas. I had the starter rebuilt. went to start it this morning for the first time and when it started the bendix would not disengage. I have it wired as it was before the starter rebuilt. the celenoid is a three post unit, lower is the power from the battery and another medium wire, the second up is a fairly heavy wire and then a light wire, the inner post is a light wire. so can someone post a picture or tell me what I could be doing wrong. thanks

I'm gonna GUESS your engine has a primary ignition resistor with a "starting bypass" and wires are either mixed up at the ignition resistor or at the solenoid so ignition voltage backfeeds the solenoid coil once cranking begins.

It has been almost 44 years since I have done this, but the heavy wire from the battery and the other wire go on the top post. Like worn out mentioned you do have a by pass wire that goes on a separate post so your solenoid should have 4 terminals. I will look after lunch in my book.

O. K. You need a 4 post solenoid. There should be 5 wires unless someone added something, The top post should have 2 wires. The cable from the battery and the smaller wire with ab eyelet that fits this post. The small post on the outside should have the wire from the solenoid terminal of the ignition switch. The terminal on the backside gets the remaining small wire. The bottom post of the solenoid gets the short heavy wire and the other end attaches to the post on the starter. More questions?
