No oil on the over/under dipstick

Looking at a Deutz-Allis 9150 which is a Frankenstein combination of an Oliver drivetrain, White cab, and Deutz air cooled engine.

Should there be oil on the over/under dipstick when it's not running and sitting pointed downhill? Or is it like a vintage automatic transmission where it needs to be running (and in gear IIRC) to get an accurate dipstick reading?

If I get stuck with the thing, I'll get a manual.

Should show, yes. They don't hold much, 4 quarts I believe, so it's doesn't take much to run them out. With those higher horsepower tractors like that, use a Hy Tran or Hy Guard type oil, not ATF. ATF is too thin and causes issues with the bearings.

It needs to be sitting level to check. The heavier O/U's hold 6 qt. They can leak externally or internally through the trunion mount into the transmission.

The splines are stripped out of the overdrive fiber clutch plates. Its possible that the unit will run fine for years, but you will only have underdrive and direct.
