The Sending Unit is Bad

Today I parked both 550’s side by side, ran jumper cable from one ground to the other. I took a jumper wire from the bad sending unit to the working guage, it read hot just like the other guage did

Then I switched the wires and checked the guage that read hot all the time and it reads like it should. So the guage is good and the sending unit is the problem.

Clearly worked for you but soo much easier to compare the senders resistances (cold and hot) using a multimeter! I’ve never yet come across a faulty gauge - it’s always been the sender or wiring - but there may be a first time, yet.

The sender unit is simply a temperature dependent resistance with negative coefficient of resistance with rise in temperature (cf. a normal resistor). As such, that is not polarity sensitive. Swapping gauges from tractor to tractor is a different matter.

I also have two 550 with temperature gages that read hot. I replaced one of the sensors with a part from Steiner but it still read hot. I read somewhere on this forum that parts from China don’t work and read hot. Any idea where sensors that work correctly can be purchased. I also have a similar problem with the gas gage. Got the new sensor from Steiner with a similar problem.
Thanks
