PTO powered hydraulic pumps

We use our 1550 as a loader tractor to handle round bales. Currently, the tractor hydraulic system is used to power the loader. Carrying two bales, one on the 3 point hitch and one with the loader, plus steering really makes the tractor hydraulic system work hard. We are thinking about running the loader with an independent pto driven hydraulic unit. What is a good pto unit to use? We are looking for some recommendations. Thanks .

There are two basic types of PTO pumps. Huge pumps that are direct-driven, and small pumps that are sped up with a gear-box. The latter are available pretty cheap from China. The direct-driven big pumps are sold by Prince and I am sure other makers.

I will assume the direct-drive big pumps are the most rugged, and also the most expensive.

Your PTO turns 1/4 to 1/5 speed of what most pumps are rated at. So the pump either needs to be 4-5 times the size, or 4-5 times as fast.

I have both pumps. My direct-drive Prince PTO pump is 20 years old and I have had no issues with it. I also have a small Chinese PTO pump that runs my three-point-hitch backhoe. I have never trusted it, but so far - it has been fine.

I run 4 loaders with pto pumps, 2 1655s and 2 77s all direct drive prince or farmhand, I think the farmhand pumps were made by prince. easy to rebuild and put in new seals. I like this system better so as not to contaminate tractor hydraulics. They also have a higher capacity. if you need to use PTO for something else you can get a PTO extension that will go thru the pump and extend out the back. Some olivers you will need a short extension to to keep the pump from hitting the pto clutch housing. You can probably buy an old farmhand loader with a pump cheaper than you can buy a new pump.

I've been tempted to go that route on my 1600. I have a pump here that was on a Farmhand loader that I bought for the bucket, but the pump laid in the dirt and was oily around a seal, so I figured it would need one. Then there's the whole thing with a reservoir and all, so I just abandoned the idea.

I picked up an 1850 last summer set up with a PTO driven pump on the loader. The tractor is able to run through chores at a steady 1400 to 1500 rpm but I could really feel the power draw when going up hills and lugging. It seems to be much easier on the tractor and I don’t have to do all that revving up and and down that happens with my other 1850 which runs the loader on tractor hydraulics. Popping the pto in and out makes for a busier time for the driver but the pto powered pump has a bit more mid range flexibility than my other tractor. If I was building it from scratch I would like to see the pump run off the aux drive under the fuel pump and controlled with an electric clutch. My tractor uses one of the fender tanks as a reservoir but has no cooler. If I was running it all day when above zero I think I would need a cooler of some sort.
