Question, how can I tell if my '68 1650 has a 540/1000 PTO versus just 540 ? Are there readily visual differences between castings? Maybe pictures of difference? Thanks in advance.

The easy way is call the Floyd County Museum in Charles City Iowa and get the build sheet for your '68, it would show the 540/1000 pto option if it has it -- along with other interesting stuff about the tractor.

Other way is pull the PTO shaft out. With the 540/1000 option you had a separate shaft for the 540 rpm and one for the 1000 rpm. The 1000 rpm shaft is longer and the splines fit into the pto further back than the 540 to mate to the 1000 rpm gearing. You switch speeds by changing the shafts. Once the shaft is out look for a plug that comes out -- where the 1000 rpm shaft is inserted.

If you pull your 540 shaft and oil runs out you don't have a dual speed unit the rear end oil will run out. Back then there were not too many 1000 RPM implements. Around here we serviced about 40-50 1650/1655 tractors and one had a dual speed PTO and we put it in because he bought a foragage chopper that had a1000 RPM PTO.
