Oliver 1850

I own a well used Oliver 1850. Recently it started belching grear oil and possibly hydraulic fluid. I occasionally have to open the test plug and drain the 4x4 unite and top off the transmission and hydraulic reservoir. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

OK,I see what's going on now. When you posted on the other forum I had in my head that the oil was blowing out a vent in the front differential or something. You're having to drain it off the transfer case then? Like I said before, not familiar with the 4x4,I'd think there'd be a seal between the transmission and transfer case, but again, don't know. If there is,you have two problems, that seal and a hydraulic leak.

Most probable leak is the seal in the hydraulic pump. The way that pump mounts,if that seal blows,it leaks in to the transmission, not the hydraulic reservoir. Two other places it can leak, there's a draft sensing rod that comes up through the hydraulic reservoir pan that can leak,or it could have developed a hole in the pan somehow, but that's the least likely. My bet would be on the pump seal. I've blown two of them and had to drain oil off using the oil level check plug in the PTO housing.

Like Jack said, you'll have to lift the whole top off the transmission/rear end.

My old factory mechanic friend often tells the story of 2255s showing up at the dealer leaking out the breather of the transfer cases, dripping oil all over the trailer deck. Turns out there was some careless assembly at the factory and when they were stabbing the transfer cases on, they were catching the lip of the transfer case seal on the shaft.

But you have compound problems, hydraulic fluid leaking into the transmission oil, and then transmission oil in the transfer case. If it's a well used tractor as you describe, there could be multiple issues leading to the problems you have. It sounds like to me everything is quite worn and absent a teardown and rebuild, you could be be playing wack a mole and chasing problems for a long time.

I agree with your assessment. I had the engine out once to replace the clutch. I imagine I'll have to do the same. Pulse remove the top of the trany. Remove the hydro power unit, witch is fine. Any recommendations on seals or bearings that are hard to get? Stuff I should start looking for ahead of time.

Fix the hydraulic leak first, and then see just how bad the transmission to transfer case seal is leaking. For the transfer case overfilling, you can run a hose from the transfer case fill tube back under the tractor and put a nipple in one of the plugs on the pto and recycle the transmission oil back to the transmission.
