Not sure what this is supposed to be made of? Is it possible it is some kind of bone? Not sure why they would use it to put Oliver dealer name on?? Anyone know the history on this?

I wonder if it' something they hung up on a tent or awning at a county fair or something? Sometimes you wish they'd have labeled these things so we knew what they were 60 or 70 years later. LOL

I didn't notice until after I posted the first reply, but does that say Germany upside down at the left end? Something repurposed with the name put on it then?

Could it be a tool to help part the strands of a rope when so you could weave the unwound ends back into the rope when making a loop? It seems that I recall that appearance on a lasso Dad and Grandpa used to lasso to capture bull calves that they were making into steers. It had a metal insert in the loop to keep the long end from fraying. Would have been 80 years ago.

yes it does say Germany. This came in a box of misc stuff I bought at an online auction. most of the stuff at sale was from the Kevin Johnston estate, a renowned Oliver collector in Ontario that I am sure a lot of people on this board would know. I am going to go with a wetstone as couple people suggested, but not sure as it seems way too smooth?

I have the exact same item in a Minneapolis Moline version in my collection of MM memorabilia. Mine has the same shape and is in the original box with some documentation. It is a whetstone as someone else mentioned. Even though I collect MM, I have to come over here and check up on you Oliver people from time to time. I hope that is allowed!!
I am always amazed at the variety of items that the different companies used for advertising purposes, and it seems that Oliver was no exception.
