1755 diesel fuel problem

So I just bought this tractor that has been sitting for a long time. We put batteries in and were able to get it to start even on the old fuel. After it ran for a short time it died but it would start and run for short periods of time. We changed the fuel filter and drained all the fuel and tried it again. Now it starts and runs up to whatever RPMs the throttle is set at and then it dies. It acts like it is running through the fuel in the line and then it just dies. It will start back up and do the same thing over and over? Any ideas on what to check? Thanks in advance for the help.

Could be the return check valve on top of the injection pump is clogged. There's also a chance the plastic flex ring in the injection pump is the culprit as they rot. I'd pull the check valve and clean it out. If there's anything resembling coffee grounds you'll need an injection pump rebuild with the updated solid part. I'd also pull the little timing cover on the pump and see if there's coffee grounds there as well.

Did you check the filter screen right at the inlet to pump? There is a fine mesh screen under the pump inlet fitting. Second thing is check the return line check valve like some one else mentioned. I assume you get a steady flow of fuel when u disconnect the supply line at pump?

Try running engine with timing cover on pump loose, if it runs
fine WITH the fuel leak, but dies with cover tight injection
pump needs repair. I repair pumps like that each week.

Dieseltech: Does loosening cover do same thing as pulling check out of return line? I have a roosa on a 310 puller that was modified by local diesel shop that just never seemed to put out the fuel it should, although it worked o/k. Then this past spring it would run for a while then die, wait for few minutes, then it would restart for maybe 3 or 4 minutes then die again. Kinda like fellows trouble on this post only sounds like mine would run longer? after all the normal checks I pulled the check valve right out and it seemed to run fine, although I sense it is getting even less fuel now at full load? Thing is there was no signs of flex ring breaking up, or any thing in or stopping return check up. Any ideas what issue could be? Guess I need to take it back to pump shop?

Loosening the side cover removes any housing pressure that WILL cause pump to shut down. In your case I'd inspect the COMPLETE return side from pump back to the fuel tank. Any restriction at all will shut down Syanadyne/Roosa and CAV DPA injection pumps. Common ag return ball check fittings are 3-5 PSI or 8-10 PSI, and no more..
