head gasket

Doing a complete engine on 1655. Gaskets from Tisco. Noticed the diameter of the large hole on the new head gasket is 4.25 inch and that measurement on the old gasket is 4.00 inch. It just barley sits on top of the sleeve. I can recall someone else talking about this.

I think John kind of answered your question. Sounds like you have head gasket for a 283 ( diesel 1655) It would be about 4 1/4 to suit the 1/8 th inch larger bore of the 283. I am checking sleeve standout in attached pic, head gasket sits down on the lower part of sleeve.

I think they make them bigger so you don't crack the sleeve when you torque down the head. They want the torque pressure to be on the block and not the sleeve. The new sleeves are not as good as the oems. There was a lot of problems with that a few years ago.

I am working on a gas. I checked the gasket imprint on the sleeves I took out and the head gasket had a 4 inch bore. The gasket that came with this engine kit from Yesterdays Tractor (supplied by Tisco) had a 4.25 inch bore. I got in touch with Olson's gaskets in Port Orchard Wash. They said the FEL-PRO number for the head gasket was 7641B. It had a 4 inch bore. Also he sent me a dimensional drawing of the gasket. It is a current part and I should be able to buy it locally.
